Key #1 to Business Networking

Start thinking about networking as STRATEGIC MARKETING rather than a way to get clients and sales.

The first key to networking is to DEVELOP A STRATEGY for meeting the right people and teaching them about your character and competence. Assess your expertise and current arenas. What are you doing now to network? Where? Your current arenas maybe a Chamber of Commerce, golf league, PTA, or aerobics class. Do people in your current arenas know what you do? Have you taught them to respect and trust you? Research where your ideal clients congregate then DEVELOP A STRATEGY for getting involved with them!

Key #2 to Business Networking

RELAX and HAVE FUN! Stop trying to “get more clients!”

Approach networking as a person, rather than a business. Think of it as an opportunity to:

  1. Learn about others’ needs, passions, and desires;
  2. Educate others about your personal character and competence.

When you listen to someone talk about their passions, needs and desires you can begin developing a personal relationship by offering support, information and resources to demonstrate your character and competence. Remember networking is all about developing personal relationships with strategic people!
